House 3
The house is occupied by Shantabai Babaurao Patil, the elder of the household, who lives with her two sons. One son remains unmarried, while the other lives in the house with his wife and their three children.
This stone house in Utre, Kolhapur, is over a hundred years old and accommodates the family within a linear spatial arrangement. The rooms and sopas are organized along a single axis. The bahersopa forms the first threshold and directly engages with the road, which hosts many daily activities. Moving inward, the madhyasopa typically houses the devghar and acts as the spiritual and organizational core of the house. The final space along the axis is the syampakgharjevanghar, or kitchen.
There is no defined sleeping area; spaces are shared and adapted as needed, with the youngest family member sleeping in the mala, an attic-like space above. At the rear, the house merges into a cowshed and opens onto a small backyard. This area accommodates children’s play and a toilet block.
