House 4

House 4 in Utre, Kolhapur is headed by Maruti Patil, the elder of the household, who lives with his two sons. Both of the children are married and live with their families together. This house was originally built over fifty years ago but was completely renovated in the past decade.

The house is made with stone walls and has a single chowkat and two kholis on the ground floor. The first kholi being the kitchen and the other one being the storage for animal feed. The family stays on the upper floor with the same layout. They also have a shed for the cows they rear and during the construction, the family used to stay in the ‘janwar house.’ The new house is organized along a single axis, with doors aligned

The angan forms the initial threshold and forms a node.  Moving inwards, we enter the hall where the elders of the house usually rest and spend their time the most.

After the hall, comes the madhyaghara which is seen as a mixed used space by various members of the house. The last space along the axis is the kitchen, which opens to the rear of the building. There is a toilet next to the stairs which leads to the janawar ghar.
