House 1
The house belongs to a priest’s family (Guravs) and has been associated with temple service for generations. Built by the father of Tukaram Gurav, the structure reflects continuity of occupation rather than change. Tukaram Gurav (around 80–85 years old) continues to perform his daily duties at the temple; pooja, naivaidya, and overseeing rituals, especially on Saturdays and during festivals. The household includes his wife, son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren, with farming forming a parallel daily routine
The house is built simultaneously in two levels: a stone lower level and a brick upper level. The raised upper floor prevents water ingress during monsoons, a recurring issue for downhill lane houses that often face flooding from the river. Lofts accessed by ladders are used to store wood, cow dung cakes, and other materials. Bathrooms were added later and expanded over time, indicating gradual adaptation rather than planned modification.
Water is sourced from the hill through pipes, stored in tanks, and supplied to the village in turns, upper lanes one day, lower lanes the next. Despite limited water availability, storage containers are found throughout the house. Cooking earlier relied directly on firewood; today, cow-dung cakes are prepared and dried over two to three days, alongside the use of gas. Sewage runs through open gutters, its final discharge unclear.
